The mission of the Cloud Architecture team at First Republic is to design the cloud platform to support cross-functional teams in all lines of business (LOBs) at the bank. This encompasses not only the cloud’s foundational architecture, which enables deployments into the cloud amongst our federated internal development partners, but also development in support of facilitating migration to the cloud.

 

The Cloud Architecture team is seeking a leader to further drive and deliver on our cloud platform strategy. You will be directing a team of cloud architects who are designing our next generation of infrastructure using major Public Cloud Providers (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.) in a secure, compliant, and efficient manner. Working in small Agile teams empowered to move rapidly to meet objectives, these teams consist of engineers, cloud architects and scrum-masters organized to deliver enterprise-grade capabilities and applications to our internal colleagues across the bank.

 

This position will be responsible for the bank’s high-level cloud strategy and design.  In this role, you will supervise a team of cloud architects, which are distributed across multiple scrum teams. These cloud architects act as product owners on these scrum teams, prioritizing and designing solutions that the scrum teams implement.

 

What you’ll do as Director of Cloud Architecture:

  • Own the overall design of First Republic’s cloud architecture,
  • Champion First Republic’s cloud first & cloud smart approach,
  • Work with our stakeholders to prioritize their requests to be undertaken by the scrum teams, 
  • Partner with Enterprise Architecture, Information Security Architecture, and other architects in the company on solution design, strategy, and organizational change,
  • Contribute to the successful migration of applications from our internal virtualized environments to our Public Cloud
  • Elevate the delivery execution of multiple agile engineering squads through:
    • Responsibility for squad work prioritization and scope,
    • Responsibility for target state architecture
  • Elevate the maturity and expertise of individual architects by:
    • Ensuring that critical skills are identified, cultivated, and reinforced,
    • Contributing to our standards of training and knowledge, and via
    • Mentorship and coaching
  • Elevate the excellence of our department by:
    • Advocating for and creating new design patterns,
    • Improving our onboarding experience for new architects,
    • Meaningfully contribute to the recruitment of new architects
  • Elevate the engineering excellence across First Republic:
    • Evangelize, educate, and consult with peers to promote DevSecOps best practices with an emphasis on automation, CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and immutable infrastructure, and
    • Educate internal teams on the benefits of using public cloud architecture

 

 

 

 

You could be a great fit if you have:

  • 4+ Years of experience with managing engineers or architects in an agile environment,
  • 5+ Years of experience with one or more Enterprise Server Operating Systems, (Windows/Unix/Linux),
  • 4+ Years of experience with a Public Cloud Provider (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure, etc.),
  • 4+ Years of solution architecture,
  • 3+ Years of experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform),
  • 3+ Years of experience with Ansible, puppet, or chef,
  • Experience with Agile/Scrum,
  • Experience with DevSecOps

Our Tools

 

There are a lot of tools in play, and we can’t expect candidates to know them all. Here’s some examples to give you a flavor of what we do:

  • Kubernetes: OpenShift (RedHat’s Kubernetes distribution), EKS, Docker, Helm and other container tools ,
  • CI/CD tools: Artifactory, Jenkins, HashiCorp Vault, Spinnaker, etc.,
  • Cloud: AWS, Terraform, Ansible,
  • Operational: NewRelic, Splunk, AquaSec, Codacy, etc.,
  • Operating Systems: Our deployment target is mostly Linux, but we support developers using Windows, MacOS, and Linux,
  • Supported platforms:js, SpringBoot, .NET Core, Python/Flask, front-end frameworks (Angular, Vue, React, etc). Really anything that can run in a container,
  • Databases: Postgres, MongoDB (Atlas), MS SQL Server, Snowflake

 

Job Demands:

  • Must be able to review and analyze data reports and manuals; must be computer proficient.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively via telephone and in person.
